Avoca Diverse Learners
Please join us tonight for our Avoca Diverse Learners Fall Kick-off meeting with Speaker Kristen Moore, D37’s Director of Student Services.

Topic: The ABCs of IEPs and 504 Plans

ADL is a support and resource group for parents of children with IEPs/504s and with all needs, including ADD, ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, and dyslexia. We also have members whose children have no formal diagnosis. This event is open to all D37 parents and caregivers.

Parent Co-leaders: Helen Lucas (312-550-2077) and Maria Niehus (847-544-8585)

7th Annual Intercultural Dinner & Talent Show
On November 18, 2022, from 6 to 9 pm, the PTC and the CommunIDEE subcommittee will be hosting the 7th Annual Intercultural Dinner and Talent Show. In the past, this beloved event drew over 400 people from our community! Our families cook homemade dishes from around the world - from the U.S. to Tibet and everywhere in between. Due to the scale of the event, we're in need of many volunteers as possible to contribute their time, food, and talent!

Our Ask:
1. Mark your calendar and look out for upcoming emails, which will include FAQs, forms to contribute food, and a Volunteer SignUp Genius.
2. Consider what dish(es) you want to bring. We want anything and everything you would like to share, even if it is not part of your ethnic origin. (e.g. you may be Indian but love to cook Ramen at home and would like to be part of the Japanese table)!
3. We have a talent show to showcase our extraordinarily talented children. Please think about talent acts that can include as many children as possible. An email regarding acts is forthcoming.
4. TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS

If you wish to volunteer more of your time and serve in the inclusive and fun group, email [email protected]. (Note: The ice cream social signup was an initial signup, and we could use even more help!)

Marie Murphy Caramel Apple Day
Order delicious Affy Tapple caramel apples from September 26 to October 7 for pickup at Marie Murphy after school on October 19 and help support the Class of ’23 in this 8th Grade Graduation Fundraiser.

Wilmette Safety & Civics Committee
Volunteers are needed to help keep our schools and students safe! The Safety & Civics Committee of Wilmette is looking for two representatives from District 37 (one from Avoca West and one from Marie Murphy Middle School) to serve alongside representatives from other Wilmette schools. The time commitment is one 1-2 hr morning meeting per month, where committee members review and discuss current happenings related to local school safety, plan Bike-to-School Days (the Bike Rodeo!), and celebrate the crossing guards. The history of the committee is that it started with a focus on pedestrian and bike safety and has expanded to safety on a variety of activities, including the Internet, social media, and emotional/physical well-being resources. Wilmette D39 is a partner to Avoca D37 in many of their community presentations on these topics. The committee member's role is to engage as a D37 rep as well as share with the D37 admin any pertinent updates from the committee.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact [email protected].

Erin's Law & Learning Parent's Night

Silent Auction Committee
The PTC's Silent Auction Committee raised nearly $30,000 last year and is looking forward to another successful year with your help! We are in need of volunteers to help solicit donations from local businesses, which will be auctioned off later this year. No past fundraising experience is needed. The collaborative efforts between our volunteers, the PTC President, and the Director of Fundraising help raise funds to purchase educational supplies/equipment and support school events for AW and MM. For more information or to donate an item to the Silent Auction, email Kristen at [email protected].

8th Grade Graduation Fundraiser

Marie Murphy Author Visit
New York Times Best-selling author Jennifer A. Nielsen will be visiting students at Marie Murphy School on Friday, October 7! Ms. Nielsen has written both fantasy and historical fiction. All students in grades 6-8 will get the opportunity to hear her speak about the writing process and her award-winning books. We can't wait! Read more about the visit here and order some great books for your family! If you prefer a paper order form, please print it and send it to school with your child.

PTC Membership
Thank you to everyone who paid their PTC dues, which are only $25 per family! It's not too late to do so if you did not get a chance. You can drop off cash or checks at your child(ren)'s school front office. To pay via PayPal or credit card, go here (there is no fee).

All dues-paying members gain access to our school directory from the Membership Toolkit website. You can also download the app using the same name. Families find the directory extremely useful when it comes to communicating with one another and coordinating meetups/classroom events. You can also easily pay for future events via the app. Be sure to create an account at the Membership Toolkit website to gain access.

We just had our first successful event, the Ice Cream Social! Your dues make events like these possible. For website issues or to check if you paid your dues, email [email protected].

Marie Murphy Room Fees
Winter holiday and year-end gifts for all Marie Murphy staff are supported by paying a $25 per child Room Fee. To contribute to this cause, register or log in to your account at the Membership Toolkit. Once you are logged in, use the left sidebar menu to navigate to "Marie Murphy" and pay your fees. Thank you for your support!

Seed-Spreading Event
When: October 9, 2022, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Gillson Park Bird Habitat at the Northwest corner of the park, above the beach parking lot

Join Go Green Wilmette as we enjoy autumn in Gillson Park. For the last habitat workday of the season in the Park’s Bird Habitat, we will celebrate the space by gathering seeds from several species of native plants growing there. We will spread the seeds in bare areas of the habitat or in places where invading plants are threatening to take over. Take guided walks through the habitat to learn what seeds to gather. Learn to identify trees from local experts and visit exhibits about native plants, insects, and the birds that visit the habitat. Apple cider and treats will be provided! This is a family-friendly event, so bring everyone and enjoy the day.
