Avoca School District 37 Board of Education Adopts Resolution Supporting Economic Development in Partnership with Schools
WILMETTE, IL — The Avoca School District 37 Board of Education voted unanimously (6-0) on June 25, 2026 to approve a
Resolution in Support of Economic Development in Partnership with Schools Regarding the Proposed Northfield Village Center Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.
The resolution affirms the Board's support for responsible economic development while expressing concern about the potential long-term impact a proposed TIF district could have on public school funding.
"We support a strong downtown Northfield, but we have yet to see a compelling case for using a TIF to achieve it," said Board President Dan Seals.
For Avoca School District 37, the Board believes it is important to understand how the proposed TIF may affect the District's long-term financial stability, its ability to support educational programs and services, and the distribution of property tax responsibilities across the community.
"Supporting strong communities and supporting strong schools are complementary goals," said Superintendent Dr. Sandra ArreguÃn. "The Board's resolution recognizes the importance of
economic development while advocating for a collaborative approach that considers the long-term impact on students, families, and taxpayers."
The resolution also affirms the District's commitment to working collaboratively with the Village of Northfield, neighboring school districts, and other local governments throughout the TIF review process. District representatives will continue to participate in discussions and statutory review procedures to ensure the educational and fiscal interests of the community are represented.
