super library girl

I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve as the Information Technology Center Director and School Librarian for Avoca West Elementary School since 2009. In 2006 I joined Avoca District 37 to create and implement the Kindergarten Interdisciplinary Program (KIDS), meaningfully incorporating literacy, art, music, Spanish and technology instruction for young learners. Formally I spent 17 years serving as a preschool-3rd grade classroom teacher in northern Illinois.

In addition to my teaching experience, I am honored to be a member of The Reynolds Center for Teaching, Learning, and Creativity League of Visionaries, and a National Geographic Certified Educator. I am currently most proud to be working with Veterans, authors, illustrators, students, staff, community members, and peace ambassadors to build a library in Trang Bang Vietnam, home village of Kim Phuc. Kim is commonly known as "The Girl in the Picture" taken in June 1972 by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, Nick Ut. (Be sure to see the 2019 photo of Kim visiting Avoca students on our ITC homepage, also taken by Nick Ut!)

I believe in empowering children to shine their light and make their mark by using their creativity, compassion, conflict resolution, collaboration, and communication skills while connecting their DOTS to self, text and world. I am fortunate to be able to do this each day by engaging in conversations with students about picture books and quality literature, as well as  bringing in established authors/illustrators as often as possible to inspire us all to dream big!

Outside of work I enjoy reading, running, traveling and any opportunity I get to spend time with any one, or on very rare occasions all four, of my incredible adult sons!
