Social Studies




The Social Studies units are taken from the NCSS (National Council for Social Studies). Students also read books related to these topics in the literacy block.

Fall:  My Community
By the end of the unit students will be able to:

(1) Gain an understanding of how important historical events and developments have shaped our community

(2) Examine where people, places, and resources are located, why they are there, and why this matters.

(3) Recognize how families, civic, educational, and governmental organizations embody the core social values of the individuals and groups who comprise them.


Winter:  Different Types of Communities
By the end of the unit students will be able to:

(1) Ask and find answers to questions related to culture and geographic regions

(2) Find, select, organize, and present information to compare various cultures according to specific aspects of culture, such as institutions, language, and the arts

(3) Ask and find answers to questions about the production and distribution of goods and services.


Spring:  Communities Around the World 
By the end of the unit students will be able to:

(1) Understand the roles of different kinds of population centers in a region.

(2) Understand that regions provide links between people in different locations according to physical, economical, social, or cultural needs.
