TYPES OF ASSISTANCE

Free Lunch Program

Your child may be eligible for the free lunch service if you receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), if you care for a foster child, or if your gross household income is at or below that set out in the eligibility guidelines published annually by the Illinois State Board of Education.  If you qualify for free lunch all Instructional, Transportation and Activity fees are automatically waived. To apply for the free lunch program for the 2019-2020 school year you can fill out the Household Eligibility Form and submit to Beth Dever in the Avoca Business Office at 847-251-3587.  Forms are also available in the school offices. The 2020-2021 Household Eligibility Form will be available by July 26, 2020.

Fee Waiver Application

If you qualify for free lunch all instructional, transportation and activity fees are automatically waived. Families that do not qualify for the free lunch program but are experiencing financial hardship may apply to receive a partial fee assistance.  To apply, please submit the Fee Waiver Application and proof of income (pay-stub, W2 or most recent tax return) to Beth Dever in the Avoca Business Office.  Forms are also available in the school offices.
Because of the timing of the onset of COVID-19, the financial hardship experienced by many families would not appear on the most recently filed tax return, specifically the 2019 return. Therefore, the Business Office will also accept any formal documentation of loss of employment during 2020 and will waive fees for any household that submits such documentation.
Examples of formal documentation of proof of income or financial hardship will be expanded to include:  - Copy of the unemployment benefits application - State record of having submitted unemployment benefits application
For small business owners whose businesses have been disrupted or shuttered: - An application for a Small Business Administration Loan or Grant  - A notarized letter also signed by a witness not in the business owner’s family.

Payment Plans

Any family may contact Beth Dever in the Avoca Business Office at 847-251-3587 to set-up a payment plan to help alleviate undue financial hardship through the assessment of school fees.

The Viking Fund

The Viking Fund was established to be used to assist families with activity fees including athletic, Science Olympiad, school play, band and orchestra fees.  Once students have enrolled in a program with Activity Fees, they will be given an Activity Fee Packet, which contains further information about Activity Fees, Activity Fee Payment Form, Fee Waiver Form and a Viking Fund Donation Form.   To apply for activity fee assistance, please submit the Fee Waiver Application and proof of income to  Beth Dever in the Avoca Business Office. If you qualify for free lunch, all activity fees are automatically waived.

The Viking Fund is supported through the donations from members of the Avoca Community which include district families, staff and/or community members. For more information about how to make a donation, please visit the Viking Fund page.
